Recorded between August 2006-February 2007. A nice fellow from Idaho
named Raymond Richards built a swell little studio in his garage out
in Rancho Park, CA. Raymond is one of those guys that orders bits of
microphone through the internet and puts them together in the garage.
He has a couple great vintage pianos and a wealth of other sound
mechanisms and toys swarming about his place. I tried to use it all.
Resident engineer, Dan Long, got involved early on and we formed an
acute understanding of sound recording and sandwich consumption. Dan
is from NY. So I guess that's how he knows about fancy equipment. If I
wanted to beat on the furniture or play the floor, Dan made it sound
good. It was quite an adventure. The record took a while, due to a lot
of starting and stopping, working around downtime, and writing the
album as I went. I wanted to capture the intimacy and simplicity of
the self-titled EP, but at the same time make a more adventurous
record. Plus some of the songs were really calling for an elaborate
treatment. This was sometimes difficult to balance, but I think it
helped create a nice diversity about the album. Many wonderful folks
I've met in LA came out to play horns and strings and drums throughout
the process. I'm ever so grateful to all that helped out; It was a
lovely experience.

I recorded the self-titled ep between december 2005- february 2006 in my apartment in los angeles. It's a one room apt in a two story building from the 1930's. The floors are wood, and the walls arch when they hit the ceiling. There is also a large kitchen that I would sometimes use to record for the natural reverb. I didn't set out to make an ep, I was just putting some songs down, trying to figure out where my music was going, having lost inspiration to write for the band I had been playing with for a few years.
Dawn took me to a birthday party at an Indian restaurant. It was for a friend of hers, but I don't think they were that close. We ended up becoming great friends with her friend's boyfriend that night. He had baked her a chocolate cake, although they were obviously breaking up, and over dinner Dawn suggested that he play drums with me. She always does embarrassing stuff like that, but it really worked out this time. J and I started playing shows around LA, and he played on the ep. Tracks 3,4 &5. We set up drums in the apt., I think new years day '06. No complaints. The recordings are pretty lo-fi. I just had a ghetto rigged protools system, two 57s and a cheap condenser mic. I love this record though. There is something wonderful that exists in a recording when it's just you and the gear. Something pure.
